I recently saw a lovely video of a wall designed as a safe nesting place for amber listed sand martins. The design team of Dermot Doran and Lynda Huxley have kindly shared the design with me so that I can share with you, see pdf for download below.
Lynda also brought my attention to a booklet she produced giving best practice guidelines for building nest boxes for the Swift into new builds. This booklet was produced with funding from a NPWS scheme for Small Recording Projects in 2021 and is available on swiftconservation.ie . Lynda carries out voluntary work for the swift and tells me that in Mayo, where she is based, there has been a 23% increase in Swift occupied nest sites since 2012.
I wish her, Dermot and all those working hard towards the conservation of our biodiversity the very best with this and future projects.
